Blogs that help people understand vitiligo
There is a lot of information about vitiligo on the internet right now, in the final quarter of 2019. And it’s a sure bet that next year will increase the sum of online vitiligo knowledge and awareness even further. Keeping up to date with it all (and avoiding the inevitable misinformation out there) can be time-consuming. So, if you like to keep abreast of developments, it pays to know where to look. One of the simplest ways to do this is to subscribe to some good vitiligo blogs. So today I would like to share with you my top 5 vitiligo blogs to follow in 2020.
Which vitiligo blogs you prefer to follow will depend on your own perspective. You may be more interested in the condition from a personal viewpoint or a scientific one. Your interest might be specifically medical, psychological or social. Perhaps you are looking for peer support or a sense of community. Or maybe, like me, you are keen to learn as much as you can about the subject from every angle possible. Whatever your outlook, the following 5 vitiligo blogs each have uniquely differing perspectives. But, in my opinion, they all really help people understand vitiligo better. And, hopefully, they will all continue to dish up plenty to satisfy your hunger for all things vitiligo now and in the coming year.
1. The best medical vitiligo blog
Dr John Harris of the Vitiligo Clinic & Research Center, University of Massachusetts does not have vitiligo himself. But he is probably the world’s foremost vitiligo expert. His understanding of the skin condition is unrivalled, partly because he is a clinician as well as a research scientist. In other words, he treats patients as well as pioneering new treatments. This means that he understands the subject from both the scientific and the personal perspective. Following his “Speaking of Vitiligo” blog is, as far as I’m concerned, the best way to stay updated on scientific developments and news on clinical trials.
2. The most inspiring vitiligo celebrity to follow
Already a well-known personality through his career as a TV anchor and Emmy Award-winning news reporter, Lee Thomas has become one of the most famous people who have vitiligo. After incorporating his powerful personal vitiligo journals into a book called “Turning White”, he added spokesperson-for-vitiligo-and-motivational-speaker to his list of accomplishments. As he is so active across all forms of media, one of the simplest ways to keep up to date with all of his inspirational work is via his Instagram page.
3. Best vitiligo lifestyle blog
Written primarily for girls and women with vitiligo, this glossy and contemporary site is an all-female collaboration between seven writers. Each of them either has vitiligo themselves or has loved ones with the skin condition. Subjects range form vitiligo advocacy, to beauty, health and personal experiences. Posts are regular and well-written and the look and feel of the site is lively, upbeat and youthful. Living Dappled is a good one to follow in order to feel connected to the vitiligo community, particularly if you are young and female.
4. Most influential vitiligo beauty ambassador
Initially achieving celebrity status as a finalist on “America’s Next Top Model”, Winnie Harlow became a highly successful fashion model. And she also became an inspirational role model for people with vitiligo worldwide. By successfully introducing the concept of vitiligo beauty into mainstream culture, she has developed into an influential ambassador for the skin condition. The fact that big brands now include models with vitiligo and other visible difference in their advertising campaigns is largely thanks to her courage and talent. The easiest way to keep track of her activities and accomplishments is by following her on Instagram.
5. Vitiligo recovery and general information blog
I certainly don’t count myself in the same league as any of the above. But not to include my own blog in my recommendations would be disingenuous. 😉 It would also leave my list of favourite vitiligo blogs incomplete! Not surprisingly, this is the one I know best because I have lived it first-hand and continue to live it every day.
It began as a simple account of my personal experience of a lifetime spent with vitiligo and an unexpected recovery in my 50s. In it I document my use of nutritional supplementation and UV light to reverse and manage my vitiligo. But the blog rapidly developed into a general information and support site, covering every aspect of the condition. Subjects range from medical research to psychology and even to vitiligo poetry. It is written from the heart and from an insatiable fascination as to the causes, treatments and effects of vitiligo. Above all, it is my personal message of hope.
